Many parents scoff when they are told that implementing proper rules of hygiene in the house is the best way of preventing diseases. Many persons believe that the importance of hygiene and cleanliness has been overemphasized.

Well, you will quickly discover that minor violation of cleanliness and hygiene rules is enough to make your child fall ill. Well, if you do not follow hygiene rules at home, why is it that others do not fall ill? Well, adults have an immune system that is far stronger than the immune systems of children.

Do you remember the story of the big bad wolf and the three pigs? The pigs that build houses of hay and wood were blown away. On the other hand, the pig that invested in a cement and brick house survive. This is exactly the difference between children and adults. Your immune system is so strong that you can manage even if you do not wash your hands regularly after playing in the dirt. However, you can be rest assured that your child will fall ill.

Do not make the mistake of letting your child make these mistakes before you learn the lesson. With a new diseases affecting mankind on a regular basis, you certainly don’t want your child to be the target of a new disease that has occurred because of improper cleanliness and hygiene rules.

The rules are so simple that you may ignore it before you even realize it. Pay attention to the smallest rule. That is only way you can send the message across your child that obeying hygiene rules is not negotiable.

Home Remedies For Minor Ailments

For children getting the occasional scrape is a fact of life. So too is the occasional cold or tummy ache. In fact, children are susceptible to a variety of conditions that may respond to home treatments. Every mother knows that being a part-time doctor is only one of her many responsibilities.

A first-aid kit should be present in every home where there are young children. This will help in treating cuts and bruises that can result from play time activities. It is important for moms to be aware of common ailments and methods of treatment such as:

  • Sore throat: Quick relief can be provided by gargling with warm salt water. If the sore throat persists for more than a day or two, it makes sense to visit a doctor.
  • Congestion: One of the oldest remedies, Vicks Vapor Rub, is still a popular choice. If the child’s nose is stuffy, a little dab at the edge of the nostril can provide relief. You can also make saline drops with warm water and salt to relieve stuffiness.
  • Tummy aches: Brew crushed ginger in hot water, allow it to cool and give a cup to the child to drink. Most children won’t be happy with the taste but it will help. This can also help to combat nausea. Ginger ale can also provide relief.
  • Sprains: Active children occasionally twist an ankle. Relief from pain and reduction in any swelling can be helped by placing hot and cold compresses to the affected area.

Of course, you should know when a visit to the doctor is necessary. Once home treatments don’t seem to be helping, it is time to seek medical help.

Moms Using Technology for Health Information

There was a time, not too long ago, when the best source of health information for new moms was reaching out to their moms. Nothing can beat a mom who has already lived through the trials and tribulations of raising children. Today, moms are taking that kind of connectivity to the next level by adapting technology through social media networking to help them find information about diseases, symptoms, and treatments.

The go-to resource for every mom could be a simple internet source. There is no doubt that, whatever type of ailment they might need information on, they will find an abundant amount of data on numerous professional websites. A lot of the healthcare news is about advances in medicine and vaccines. While that is always important to follow, it might not always have practical applications for a mom who has a young one suffering through a bout of the chicken pox. That’s when a new mom might turn to her network of Facebook friends to ask for some easy-to-follow home care advice. Even putting out a tweet asking for treatment tips for poison ivy can be met with dozens of positive responses.

Moms can also tap into the wide array of mobile phone apps to provide them with all kinds of healthcare news as well as various medical resources. Whether they need a fast guide to first aid or a detailed explanation on a prescription’s possible side effects, moms can quickly access that information on their phones no matter where they might be. Simply put, technology is giving moms peace of mind.

One thing is certain about becoming a parent; you will acquire some medical knowledge along the way. Children are prone to various conditions and moms and dads need to recognize the signs of some of these illnesses. In addition, they will need to know when a visit to a doctor is necessary.

There are many over-the-counter (OCT) medications that can provide relief from certain ailments. However, the problem lies in knowing when to use OTC meds and when to seek medical attention. This calls for recognizing certain symptoms that can spell trouble when a child is sick.

Symptoms to Look Out For

Some symptoms in sick children that warrant a visit to the doctor are:

  • Having a fever over 102 degrees Fahrenheit that last over one day if the child is older than three months old. Consult the pediatrician for a fever in babies younger than three months old.
  • A persistent cough that lasts longer than two days for children older than six months old.
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Vomiting and diarrhea, whether together or alone
  • Listlessness and loss of appetite
  • Obvious pain or discomfort that is unaccounted for

With many childhood illnesses home care can help but professional medical attention can lead to quick recovery. On the other hand being slow to get the right treatment can cause more serious conditions. For example a cold can lead to pneumonia or a small scratch can become infected.

Generally mothers tend to have a gut feeling about their children and their health.  They should never ignore these feelings when it comes to seeking treatment for their kids.

Finding the Right Doctor for Your Child

Raising a child takes patience and planning. In order for a child to develop to his fullest, he must be both happy and healthy. Of course happiness is a relative term and it’s the job of the parents to do what they can to provide a stable environment. But healthy is a different term, and there is no relativity. If you are committed to making sure that your child is in his prime physical condition, then you must make it a point to find a reliable pediatrician.

Finding a pediatrician takes time and research. The best option, of course, is to look to your own pediatrician. If you had a good pediatrician and your parents can attest to that then it would make sense for you to go with that person. If they are not practicing, your best bet is to go to Canada 411 and start searching for a top of the line doctor for your child.

Here you can take a closer look at those people who you were referred to by your family and friends. You can read their bios and sometimes you can see previous patient comments that will help you to determine if they are the right person for your child to see.

Once you have a doctor you like you can then go ahead and schedule an appointment online for an interview. This will give you a chance to talk face to face and get a feel for who the doctor is and what kind of relationship he will have with your child. It’s an important decision and it takes time to get it right.

A sick child can make a parent feel helpless. Almost nothing pulls at our heart than not being able to comfort an ailing child. A Husband’s Guide to Pregnancy Care

For husbands looking for a complete list and itemized catalogue of procedures related to caring for a pregnant wife, this will seem piteously inadequate. There are countless methods and actions one could take to ensure a common and agreeable state of care. This, however, is an appeal for more a shift in philosophy than a list.

More important than remembering to pack a bag for the hospital is mental attitude. With the pregnant woman the man now has a new and mystical being for which life has likely provided little in the ways of practical education. If the man is a much older sibling who has experienced a pregnant mother there is a slight advantage, though it can be as much a disadvantage if the man is not careful.

This is because the relationship between a mother and her son is dramatically different than the relationship with her husband. A son may be relied upon to run errands, help with lifting and assume other general household tasks which previously may have been shared. A husband will be required to perform all those tasks without complaint, while also becoming a supporter and caregiver to a new extreme.

The trick to providing great care for a woman who is pregnant to to be as attentive as possible to the woman the man already knows so well. If he’s used to giving foot rubs, well that’s probably not going anywhere. But now there is going to be a host of new and dramatic changes to her body which are going to bring sudden shifts in how she feels, thinks and moves.

A good caregiver is going to rub get up and continue to offer what ever is needed. He is going to remember that while the demand for his time and attention has increased, it is nothing compared to the new, constant and unrelenting demand on his wife.

Understanding symptoms during pregnancy

Being pregnant, the more one learns about it, can become some sort of mystical all-encompassing miasma of symptoms, feelings and strange goings on in the woman’s body. For instance, a first-time mother recently learned from her doctor that it is not uncommon for her bowel movements to turn black in color and have the consistency of caulking putty.

That fact alone is nothing special, but combine it with the realization that it can also be normal to suddenly develop a new and often bright birth mark on her face, quaintly known as the pregnancy mask. Additionally she might gain a new headache she’s never experienced before, or get gas pain in her shoulder – not a place one might imagine gas pain to locate itself. She may even inexplicably find herself retching from foods she’s previously relished.

Of course there are still symptoms which are quite serious and warrant an immediate call to or trip to the doctor’s office. Constant and prolonged contractions or heavy, steady blood like a menstrual flow are the sorts of dangerous symptoms which need immediate care and action. But, if a woman who is beginning to show the baby bump experiences sudden and odd changes to her body, it’s going to become a running joke to blame everything on the pregnancy.

“It’s because you are pregnant,” she will hear over and over, as she asks why her nipples, nose or lips have suddenly doubled in size, or because she can’t stand Sheryl Crow anymore. She will soon realize this new human life growing inside her is change itself, embodied in a tiny, squirming body. It will change the way she moves, feels and even thinks before it’s all done. And of course at the moment the baby finally emerges, that’s when the changes really begin.

Making it Through the Rest of the 2011 Winter the Fun Way!

No doubt about it, the winter of 2010-2011 has been something!  Many areas, even in the south and other places that don’t normally experience a lot of winter, have been affected in a big way. Some other places have, of course, had it a lot worse, but you’ve got to admit that after the big storms are over, the skiing conditions are perfect!

Add to that the fact that there are still several winter holidays in the months of January, February, and March (which in many places still have excellent ski weather and conditions) and you’ve got the recipe for several more family ski holidays 2011.

Going skiing during winter school breaks (some of which are set around the time of a federal or state holiday, making it possible for everyone to be off from work and school) has many advantages. These can include smaller crowds and lower prices, both of which can provide excellent opportunities for families to start building memories.

The fact that there are ski slopes in a number of states also makes it easy to travel to and from them in the limited amount of time allotted during winter breaks. It is usually possible to find places that are close enough to your home or at least home state so that precious fun time isn’t taken up with travel.

As the winter of 2011 continues, there will be more instances of daily snowfall. Some of these times may bring on severe weather conditions, but, again, once this has passed the ski conditions will be wonderful.

If you are concerned, however, about weather affecting your 2011 family ski holidays, ask the resort managers if refunds are available for weather-related cancellations or delays. If they are, you can take advantage of them. If not, because of the fact that crowds are generally smaller and thus there are more vacancies, you can simply monitor the weather and choose a good time.
